TikTok Shop has been a physical product marketplace since launch. That changed in May 2026.
A new Virtual Goods category is now live in the US market. For the first time, sellers can list and sell digital products directly through TikTok Shop. But before you start planning to sell your course or ebook, read the fine print. What is allowed is narrow. What is excluded is almost everything else.
What Launched
The Virtual Goods category covers three product types:
1. Digital Gift Cards
Prepaid digital gift cards for brands and retailers. Think Amazon gift cards, Starbucks gift cards, gaming platform credits. The buyer purchases the card on TikTok Shop and receives a digital code.
2. Video Game Codes
Digital keys for video games, in-game currency, and downloadable content (DLC). This covers platforms like Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo eShop. The buyer receives a redeemable code after purchase.
3. Software Licenses
License keys for software products. Antivirus subscriptions, productivity tools, VPN subscriptions, creative software -- anything delivered as a digital license key.
All three categories share a common requirement: delivery must be API-based. When a customer completes a purchase, the code or key must be delivered automatically through an integrated system. Manual delivery -- emailing a code, sending a DM -- is not permitted.
What Is Not Included
This is the more important list for most readers.
Not supported:
- Ebooks and digital books. Not included in the Virtual Goods category. No timeline for inclusion.
- Online courses and educational content. Cannot be sold through TikTok Shop, despite courses being one of the most common digital products on TikTok.
- PDFs, templates, and downloadable guides. Not supported.
- Digital art and design assets. Not supported, including stock photos, illustrations, and design templates.
- Subscriptions and recurring memberships. The Virtual Goods category is for one-time purchases only. Recurring billing is not supported.
- NFTs and digital collectibles. Explicitly excluded.
- Music and audio files. Not supported.
- Coaching and consulting services. Services are not products -- they remain outside TikTok Shop's scope.
If you sell courses, ebooks, templates, or digital services, TikTok Shop is not your channel. At least not yet.
The API Delivery Requirement
This is the technical barrier that limits who can realistically participate.
Every digital product sold through TikTok Shop must be fulfilled automatically through an API integration. When a purchase is completed, the system must:
- Receive the order notification from TikTok Shop
- Generate or retrieve a unique code/key
- Deliver that code to the buyer automatically
- Confirm delivery back to TikTok Shop
This means you need either:
- Your own API infrastructure for code generation and delivery
- Integration with a third-party digital fulfilment platform that supports TikTok Shop's API
- A sufficiently large inventory of pre-generated codes with an automated delivery pipeline
Manual fulfilment is not an option. If you are a small seller who currently emails codes to buyers, you will need to build or integrate automated delivery before you can participate.
Market Availability
Currently live: US only.
Expected next: UK and EU markets are expected to follow within 6-12 months, though TikTok has not confirmed a specific date. The regulatory environment in the UK and EU for digital goods is more complex (VAT on digital services, consumer rights for digital content under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 in the UK), so additional compliance work is likely required before expansion.
Other markets: No announced timeline.
Who This Category Is Actually For
Right now, the Virtual Goods category serves a specific type of seller: companies that operate digital key distribution at scale. Think CDKeys, G2A, Kinguin, or authorized gift card distributors. These businesses already have the API infrastructure, the inventory pipeline, and the volume to justify the integration.
For individual creators selling their own digital products -- courses, ebooks, templates -- this category is not relevant yet.

The approximately 90% of digital sellers on TikTok still use Link in Bio stores. They create content about their digital product, put a link to Gumroad, Stan Store, Shopify, or their own website in their bio, and direct viewers there. This remains the primary path for most digital product sellers on TikTok.
Alternatives for Course Creators and Educators
If you sell courses or educational content on TikTok, you have two main options:
TikTok Series
TikTok Series lets creators sell premium video content directly on TikTok. You can create a collection of up to 80 videos, each up to 20 minutes long, and set a price between $0.99 and $189.99. Buyers access the content within TikTok.
This is not TikTok Shop -- it is a separate creator monetisation feature. But it is the closest thing to selling digital educational content natively on TikTok. The main limitation is that content must be video-based. You cannot sell PDFs, workbooks, or non-video formats through Series.
Link in Bio to External Platform
The established approach. Build your audience on TikTok, create content that demonstrates your expertise, and direct viewers to your digital product on an external platform.
Common setups:
- Gumroad for ebooks, templates, and simple digital products
- Teachable, Kajabi, or Thinkific for courses
- Stan Store for a landing page with multiple digital product links
- Shopify with digital download apps for brands that want everything under one roof
This works. It has always worked. The conversion rate from TikTok bio link to purchase is lower than in-app checkout would be, but the audience reach on TikTok is massive enough to compensate.
What Comes Next
TikTok has indicated plans to expand the Virtual Goods category beyond the initial three product types. The roadmap is not public, but the direction is clear: TikTok wants to capture digital commerce, not just physical commerce.
The most likely expansion areas:
- Digital subscriptions -- enabling recurring purchases for software and services
- Ebooks and digital publications -- high demand, relatively simple fulfilment
- Event tickets -- a natural fit for TikTok's content-driven discovery model
Courses and educational content remain uncertain. The fulfilment and access management requirements are more complex, and TikTok may prefer to handle educational content through TikTok Series rather than TikTok Shop.
One Thing to Do This Week
If you sell digital gift cards, game codes, or software licenses at scale and have API-based fulfilment, apply for access to the Virtual Goods category in Seller Center. If you sell any other type of digital product, optimise your Link in Bio store and content funnel -- that remains your primary sales channel on TikTok for the foreseeable future.
FAQ
Can I sell online courses on TikTok Shop?
No. Online courses are not included in the Virtual Goods category. Course creators should use TikTok Series for premium video content or Link in Bio stores to direct viewers to external course platforms.
What digital products can I sell on TikTok Shop?
As of May 2026, only three types: digital gift cards, video game codes, and software licenses. All require API-based automated delivery. The category is US-only and invite-only.
When will digital products be available on TikTok Shop UK?
TikTok has not confirmed a specific date. UK and EU markets are expected within 6-12 months of the US launch, subject to additional regulatory compliance work.
Do I need API integration to sell digital products on TikTok Shop?
Yes. All digital products must be fulfilled automatically through an API. Manual delivery (emailing codes, sending DMs) is not permitted.
Is TikTok Shop good for selling digital products?
For the three supported categories (gift cards, game codes, software licenses) at scale, yes -- the audience is massive and the in-app checkout reduces friction. For all other digital products, TikTok is an excellent demand generation platform, but the actual sale still happens off-platform through bio link stores.
